Vertigo & Balance Clinic
Spinning, giddiness, unsteadiness – find the cause and get the right treatment.

What is vertigo?
Vertigo is the feeling that you or your surroundings are spinning, even when you are still. It is a symptom, not a disease. Light-headedness, woozy feelings and unsteady walking are also balance problems.
Our balance depends on three systems – the inner ear, the eyes, and the sense of touch from our feet and joints. The brain combines these signals. If any of them is not working properly, we feel dizzy.
Common causes
Inner ear causes (most common)
- BPPV (Positional Vertigo) – Short spells of spinning when you turn in bed, lie down or look up.
- Vestibular Neuritis / Labyrinthitis – Sudden, severe vertigo – often after a cold or fever.
- Meniere's Disease – Vertigo attacks with fullness, ringing and hearing changes in one ear.
- Vestibular Migraine – Repeated dizziness, with or without a headache.
Other causes
- Low or high blood pressure, BP dropping on standing
- Low blood sugar, anaemia, dehydration
- Side effects of some medicines
- Anxiety and stress
- Rarely – brain problems such as stroke (these are emergencies)
When should you see a doctor?
- Dizziness keeps coming back
- It does not settle within a few days
- It comes with hearing loss, ringing or fullness in the ear
- You have fallen, or are afraid of falling
- It affects daily work, travel or your job
Why does testing matter?
Different causes of dizziness can feel alike. For example, BPPV needs head-movement treatment – tablets alone may not help. Testing shows which ear and which part is affected, so the right treatment can be chosen.
