Vestibular Neuritis & Labyrinthitis

Sudden, severe vertigo – often after a cold or fever.

What is it?

Vestibular neuritis is swelling (inflammation) of the balance nerve of the inner ear, often after a viral infection such as a cold or fever. When the hearing part of the inner ear is also affected, it is called labyrinthitis.

Common symptoms

  • Sudden, severe spinning vertigo that lasts a day or more
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Difficulty walking straight
  • Unsteadiness that slowly improves over days to weeks
  • In labyrinthitis: hearing loss or ringing in one ear

How we diagnose it here

  • The Head Impulse Test shows whether the balance nerve on one side is weak
  • VNG records the typical eye movements
  • Audiometry checks whether hearing is affected
  • The doctor also checks for warning signs that need urgent brain evaluation

Tests used: Functional Head Impulse Test VNG – Videonystagmography Audiometry (Hearing Test) Vestibular Assessment & Rehabilitation

Treatment options

  • Short-term medicines for vomiting and vertigo in the first few days
  • Medicines for the inflammation when the doctor feels they are suitable
  • Starting vestibular rehabilitation early – the key step that helps the brain adjust and regain balance
  • Follow-up visits to track recovery

The right treatment for you is decided by the doctor after examination and tests.
